Samuel Frank Vitris, Sr., 87, of Scranton, died early Wednesday at Regional Hospital of Scranton. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Jacqueline Terruso. The couple was married for 53 years.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Dominick and Josephine Crispino Vitris, he was a graduate of West Scranton High School and went on to serve honorably in the United States Marine Corps. Sam was a member of St. Lucy’s Church in Scranton. Prior to retirement, he worked as a tax administer at the Scranton Single Tax Office and later went on to work for the Scranton School District. As his part time employment, he sold compact vacuums. In the 1970s, Sam was not only a coach but also a role model for the Boys Club in Scranton and West Side Little League. He enjoyed going to the casinos, especially Atlantic City with his wife, horse racing, and playing cards but above all he loved spending time with his family. His great-grandchildren were the light of his life. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Surviving is a son, Joseph Vitris of Scranton; daughter-in-law Judy Vitris, Scranton; grandchildren Samuel F. Vitris III and wife Taryn of Archbald, Sabrina Santucci and husband Chris of Scranton, and Shalane Vitris of Archbald; great-grandchildren, Brett, Brennan, and Brynlee; his sister Kay Atwood of Newport News, VA; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by his son, Samuel Frank Vitris, Jr. in 2021; his sisters Ann Zikoski, Ann Marie Heller, and Francine Kowalski; and his brothers Frank, Joseph, and Nicholas Vitris.
The funeral will be Monday with Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Lucy’s Church, Scranton St., West Scranton. Interment to follow in Cathedral Cemetery.
Family and friends may pay their respects that morning at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of mass.
